Our Children Need Help to be Active
Sport England Active Lives Children and Young People Survey 2022-23 reports that 47% children and young people (3.5 million) do not meet government guidelines of taking part in sport or physical activity for 60 minutes/day, and 30 % (2.2 million) do fewer than 30 minutes/day sport or physical activity.
The survey additionally reports that those from least affluent families are less likely to be active, and that those from black, Asian and other ethnicities are the least likely to be active, and this has reduced over the last 5 years.
These inequalities need to be addressed.
Increased Physical Activity
Spencer Lynx provides each child with at least 1.25 hours physical activity at the weekend, for at least 26 weeks of the year – a time when parents have commented that children would not otherwise be active. After 1 year on the Lynx programme, 74% of children showed an improvement in fitness levels and a whopping 96% showed improved agility.
Attendance at our sessions is very high, with some children not missing a single session.
Improved Mental Wellbeing
Parents and our partner schools have reported improved mental wellbeing in the vast majority of our members. The children have improved confidence or self-esteem; a better sense of belonging; improved concentration and/or focus; are better connected to their communities; and feel pride representing their Club. After 1 year on our programme, 63% of the children improved their overall wellbeing.
